What is Self Advocacy?

Self advocacy is people with disability joining together to speak up and make change on issues important to them.

This means people with disability should be in charge of decisions that affect their lives and their community.

What is a Self Advocacy Group?

Self Advocacy Groups and Organisations are run by and for people with disability with something in common.

Self Advocacy Group Members work together to: 

  • Speak up and fight for disability rights issues to make good changes for people with disability.

  • Share their expert knowledge with government and the community about issues that effect them.

  • Build each others self advocacy skills and knowledge of their rights.

  • Support each other and make friends with peers.

  • Have a stronger voice together that is listened to and valued.
